Class Details:

12 hours over 2 days Work on one or two images of your choice. Bring a tablet, iPad and/or well lit images that are in focus. (2) 11 x 14" canvases.

Portrait painting is an incredible blend of technical skill and artistic expression. Here are the most essential skills you will learn to master:

1. Capturing an Accurate Likeness

The ability to accurately depict a subject’s facial features, proportions, and expression is key. This begins with careful observation and precise sketching.

2. Understanding Light & Shadow

Light defines form, so knowing how to use highlights and shadows creates depth and realism. Mastering chiaroscuro (the contrast between light and dark) helps bring portraits to life.

3. Color Theory & Flesh Tone Mixing

Skin tones are complex! Learning how to mix colors to create natural, dynamic variations is crucial. This involves understanding warm and cool tones, undertones, and shading.

4. Brushwork & Texture

Different brush techniques can enhance the realism or expressiveness of a painting. Smooth blending works for soft skin transitions while bold, visible strokes add character.

5. Composition & Backgrounds

A well-balanced composition frames the portrait beautifully. The thoughtful placement of the figure, background colors, and negative space can affect mood and focus.

6. Patience & Layering

Oil painting, in particular, requires patience—building up layers, refining details, and allowing drying time. Glazing techniques add richness and depth over time.
