Portrait Painting Materials

This class is focused on the use of oil paints. Acrylics can be used, but for best results, oil paints are recommended.

You will need:

  • Pictures or photos of your subject that are full-frame, sharp, and in focus, 

  • An iPad or tablet with images of your subject is recommended.

  • iPad Color Picker App - RPaint Lite Color Picker (free in the App Store)

  • iPad app: Grid Painter (free in the App Store)

  • Drawing materials, charcoal, pencils, chalk, erasers

  • 12 x 16" Canvas (2)

  • Container for Odorless Mineral Spirits (Gamsol) 

  • Brushes: filberts #8 & #4 (plus any you would like to bring)

  • Table top easel if you have one.

  • Pallette, rags, or paper towels.

  • Walnut oil or safflower oil for cleanup.

  • Paints:

  • Cad yellow light

  • Yellow Ochre

  • Cad red medium

  • Alizarin Crimson

  • Burnt Sienna

  • Raw Umber

  • Ultramarine Blue

  • Cerulean Blue

  • Sap Green 

  • Ivory Black

  • Titanium White
